Facing Challenges in These Days of Moral and Truth Decay (2 Timothy 4:1-5)

Down through the ages, Christians all over the world have faced many and varied challenges—some personal, some pastoral, and some societal. Who wants to suffer hardship for their faith? Who wants to face hostility because of their faith? How many prayers do we hear asking God to bring on hardship and hostility? And yet, many Christians have faced challenges in these areas.

I think the word Christian is synonymous with challenge. To be a Christian is to be challenged at every turn in life. I can remember being challenged by a sermon in the area of personal honesty. The question that the minister asked was: are we honest with ourselves, with others, and with God? In other words, are we living a life for God or a lie before God? Challenging, isn’t it!

Christians will always face challenges in their walk with God. Timothy faced many challenges in his journey with God. Challenges may be many and varied, but Paul wanted to get very specific about the challenges that Timothy would face in these days of moral and truth decay. In fact, Paul challenged Timothy to preach the word, not to pervert the word, and to persist in the word.

In many ways, these three challenges are relative to us today. Will we rise to the challenge and preach the word boldly or will we pervert the word to suit our own desires? Will we persist in the word regardless? Challenging, isn’t it! With God’s grace though, we can face these challenges and make God’s word known to the world. After all, people need to hear that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. At the same time, their eternal destiny depends on it. So let us proclaim the word of God boldly and lead people to faith in Jesus Christ!
