Free Father’s Day Sermons
One of the many privileges we have as preachers of God’s word is to share an inspirational message on Father’s Day.
As the family unit breaks down in the Western world, we need more and more dads to realize the importance of being a father to their children.
With this in mind, I decided to preach a father’s day sermon on being a godly role model to the family.

INTRODUCTION: As Christian dads, we all have the potential to be godly role models within our families. But that potential can be wasted if we don’t nurture certain qualities in our lives.
In 2 Timothy 2:20, I believe the apostle Paul drew a picture of the church in which there are people who honor God and people who dishonor God. Of course, Paul wanted Timothy to be a person who honored God and this implies certain qualities in ones life.
Being a godly role model or a vessel of honor involves several qualities. For example:
1. Being a godly role model involves a cleansed life
Look at the beginning of verse 21, “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor…”
Being a godly role model begins with a cleansed life – a life that shuns sinful activities and a life that shuns those who propagate sinful activities.
Let’s face it, we will never be vessels of honor if we are into sinful activities. Furthermore, we need to choose friends who will inspire us to live for God not friends who drag us into sin.
2. Being a godly role model involves a sanctified life
Look a the middle of verse 21, “…sanctified…”
The word sanctified simply means set apart – to live a sanctified life is to live for God.
As the apostle John said, “Jesus must increase and I must decrease.” That’s the sanctified life!
3. Being a godly role model involves a pure heart
Look at verse 22, “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
The word Paul used for ‘flee’ is the word we get our English word ‘fugitive’ from. In other words, we are to be on the run from youthful desires, avoiding capture.
What are we to flee from? Youthful desires usually include sexual desires, pride, arrogance, argumentative spirit and impatience and harshness.
4. Being a godly role model involves a discerning mind
Look at verse 23, “But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.”
Some people will argue over anything. Usually these people generate strife.
But a discerning mind is not an argumentative spirit but a gentle spirit. Look at verse 24, “And the servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient.”
5. Being a godly role model involves a humble and compassionate heart
Look at verses 25 and 26, “In humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.”
One of the greatest challenges associated with being a godly role model involves correcting those who oppose with a humble and compassionate heart.
There are times when we must correct and rebuke. But we do that in humility with a compassionate heart because God may grant them repentance.
Of course, Paul is taking about those who teach incorrect doctrine and those who practice ungodliness.
If we are going to be vessel of honor for God’s service, if we are going to be godly role models, then we need to be concerned for those who are captured by the devil and his faulty thinking.
But again we do that in humility with a compassionate heart because God may grant them repentance.
CONCLUSION: The church needs godly role models. Our homes need godly role models and our communities need godly role models – vessels of honor.
Dad, will you be a vessel of honor and be a role model to your family?
